A Growing Network

The Global Horticulture Initiative was launched by 74 participants representing 55 organizations on March 22-24, 2006 in Montpellier France, under the auspices of AVRDC - The World Vegetable Center, the Centre de cooperation internationale en rechercheagronomique pour le developpement (CIRAD) and the International Society for Horticulture Science (ISHS).

GlobalHort aims at improving the lives of millions in the developing world with the help of many allied researchers, specialists in capacity building, policy makers, as well as donors, who are willing to support its forward-looking ideas and strategies.

The global networking of all major players in horticultural research and development brings considerable synergies to the initiative. The Board of Directors includes members of the international institutions and agencies conducting horticultural research for development (Prof. Dr. Roderick A. Besides the researchers, Raul Quimson Montemayor, Executive Director of the Federation of Free Farmers is the representative of farmers. From the private (hort-business) sector, Mr. Justin Rakotoarisaona, Secretary General of the African Seed Trades Association is on the Board. Further members on the Board of Directors are Dr. Alison Hodder from the Hort Crops Group of FAO as UN organization and Dr. Mark Holderness, Executive Secretaryof the Global Forum for Agricultural Research (GFAR).
